Cornish World

oops... sorry! I mean myCornwall. :o

I've just received my copy...

Apparently Cornwall is "A ceremonial county and unitary authority in England..." :? (this taken from several other quotes about Cornwall being in England).

You can safely say that I will not be resubscribing, and will not be buying any copies in the shops as I usually do. In fact I'll go as far as to cancel my current subscription.

myCornwall.tv, owned by Insider Knowledge Ltd and based out of the university campus at Tremough, bought out Cornish World and renamed it myCornwall. myCornwall seems to be a mickey mouse operation whose sole intention is making a bit of money out of Convergence funding.

Judging by the amount of exclamation marks in their e-newsletters, their annoying Twitter account, and now their magazine articles where the standard of journalism amounts to copy-and-pasting the first sentence of a Wikipedia article, where "facts" are really just "what governments and the media say", the people running this operation seem to be sixth form students being exploited by a profit-driven strategist.

Agreed Ellery.

They did a piece about 'Castles of Cornwall' and wrote a paragraph about St Michael's Mount. The last sentence stated, 'the buildings returned to monastic use and later 'caught up in the Wars of the Roses, the Cornish Prayer Book 'Rebellion' against Edward V1, and the English Civil War'.

Having the English prayer book forced upon a mainly Cornish speaking Nation - an action that did more than anything else help to speed up the demise of our language - didn't require explantion? The atrocities that resulted and the suppression of our language that continued for years later is ignored.

Yet surprise surprise, towards the end of the article we read: Today, many of the 'county's unique, fasinating castles have been preserved, and several are in the safe hands of English Heritage! Yea, right. (Marhak rushes for the blood pressure pills)

I suppose this kind of 'journalism' was to be expected with the removal of the origional title 'Cornish World'. It hasn't taken the new publication very long in sweeping our history under the carpet - just like other so-called 'Cornish' publications and the English School Curriculum.

An Anglo-centric mindset has infiltrated a once proud Cornish magazine and things presented as 'fact' should be investigated. I won't bother because like Ellery, I'll leave it on the shelf in future. I'm sure it will appeal to their more 'English' orientated readers.

I remember some scribes on here offered their services by writing articles for myEngland. Not sure if the offers were taken up - or even acknowleged - as they would have probably been perceived as 'too Cornish' for the new publication.

What sticks in the craw even more is that this transformation from pro-Cornish publication to Anglo ''lifestyle'' rag seems to have been undertaken using Convergence funding - money that was supposed to have been awarded partly to promote Cornwall's unique cultural identity.

I thought they used their own money to buy out our Cornish magazine? So, they had some Cornish convergence money eh - makes you wonder why they deemed it fit to take 'Cornish' from the title. The phrase, 'biting the hand that feeds them' springs to mind.

This is an example of what's happening to our history. If we care enough about it, there is no better reason than to actively support http://www.campaignkernow.com/ - let's get our Cornish identity recognised in law and prevent it being undermined by 'Trojans' who have hijacked a well respected Cornish magazine to promote their own 'not so Cornish' agenda.

In front of me I have a copy of Cornish World from Nov 2006 it was given to us by the CSP, and has an article in called "The Anglo Cornish war 1549, this along with a copy from 2005 with an article "Cornwall not England" there is a photo of the old Stannary Palace in that one.

One of our first introductions to Cornish History,( been obsessed with it ever since) was really blown away to think that Cornwall was its only little country, how 8-) is that!

A re birth and part one of the article 1549 by Craig Weatherhill, can be found here

My mother and friends subscribed to Cornish World, she phoned me to say "its changed so much, we wouldn't be subscribing again"

Edited cause I got my editions in a twist  :D

I understand their feelings, Shaz

Every issue had ‘proper Cornish’ articles with the flag of St Piran printed in the top right hand corner.

An message from Issue 4 / 1995:

“To Bravely Go…….”

Twelve months ago it was impossible to predict just where this magazine might be today. The above split infinitive, borrowed from the Trekkers, says it all. We set out into the unknown, much like our forefathers. Our belief was in the Cornish who had gone before us and that they would welcome us on arrival. This faith, and that in the well-wishers at home, was well founded. We were unskilled and inexperienced. We relied upon the depth of feeling for Cornwall. This feeling has shown itself in the welcome we received, unquenchable curiosity, the willingness to support Cornwall and to share knowledge. We are all grateful to the contributors to the magazine who stimulate our feelings.

One of the remarkable factors has been the recent associations throughout the world. These organisations give a visable and tangible strength to Cornish fellowship.

Individuals, organisations and this magazine must all feel that we have the support of each other over the vast distances around the globe. Communications are increasing everyday and we are being brought together in a way which would have been impossible for divided families a few years ago. Cornish World looks forward to its second exciting year.

The Editor: Philip M Hosken

Overseas Correspondent: Howard Curnow.

myEngland is nothing of the above.

I don’t have any interest Social Networking Carrek – especially Facebook.

Far better to hit them were it hurts – stop buying myEngland!

Spackman speak:

http://www.thisiscornwall.co.uk/news/ar ... ticle.html
"Cornwall engenders strong emotions among many people and by tapping into this powerful allegiance and passion, myCornwall will offer viewers compelling programming, highly relevant to their particular interest in Cornwall."

Now, if Mr Spackman was aware of such strong Cornish emotions why then rename Cornish World myCornwall with the possibility of alienating Cornish readers?

Maybe because Mr Spackman couldn’t give a toss about the Cornish or our history. As consultant who has worked at executive level such as the Ango-centric BBC, it seems he thinks it best to override our culture because of his perception that he can make an extra few bob.

http://www.portioconsult.com/team_dorian.htm
‘Dorian Spackman is a senior consultant and advisor to companies on technology, commercial and executive strategy within the converged internet, telecoms and broadcast media industries. Dorian is a director of a company that works within the IPTV and Web TV space, linking academia and business, whilst also holding a non-executive directorship in a start-up ecommerce play.

With over 15 years of experience in a range of companies, from pure start-ups to large corporates, Dorian has worked within and managed teams of people to deliver new products, concepts, commercial results and strategic and operational change.

Dorian has worked at executive level within businesses such as LogicaCMG/ Acision, Celador/2WayTraffic, Red Fig and iTouch, with clients such as Snell and Wilcox, AmberFin, BBC, MBC and Telefonica O2. He has also worked extensively in international markets from Europe to North America, Asia and Australasia.

Dorian also has experience of building commercial and creative solutions, delivering brand messages, revenues and results for consumer brands, retailers and businesses such as Unilever, Toys R Us and Puzzler Media, across television, games consoles, internet, mobile and IPTV’.

Mr Spackman is also keen to promote his buddies Tim Smit & Jamie ‘Pukka’ Oliver. So keen in fact, that questions are included in the ‘Bumper Summer Quiz’ at the back of the latest edition of myEngland.

What’s the name of the bubble-like biomes near St Austell?
Which creator of the Eden project helped reclaim The Lost Gardens of Heligan?
Which famous TV Chef opened Fifteen, in Watergate Bay, near Newquay?

Like I said, if enough people stop buying myEngland it would make them have a rethink. It's a case of just how much people care - much like Campaign Kernow.
