Late 18th century crime records?

Post by Kaliforni » Mon Jun 04, 2012 8:52 pm

I descend from a fellow named John Lawrence, who lived 1757-1797 in Mullion, and whose burial record alarmingly states: "Wilfully murdered Cadgwith." I'm curious about the circumstances of this murder, but have been unable to find any additional details. Knowing more about it would complete a very interesting family story, which ended with John's wife, Catherine, becoming destitute after the murder, to the point where she was forced out of her parish.

I know that there are some out there who are quite experienced in finding out more about historical crimes, such as Australians who are likely to descend from the other side of such events. So, can anyone help me dig up more about this murder, such as who (if anyone) was convicted, and what the motive was? Perhaps someone has access to the assizes of 1797 and shortly thereafter?
