Rugby Shorts - Nigel Botherway beams in from planet rugby

Premiership clubs’ takeover plan

England’s 12 Premiership clubs have launched an audacious bid to run their own league next season, with no promotion or relegation.

In a twin assault, Premier Rugby also wants to take over the Heineken Cup, Europe’s biggest club competition. Mark McCafferty, the chief executive of Premier Rugby, presented his plans to conquer Europe to the governing bodies of all Six Nations at the International Rugby Board headquarters in Dublin on Wednesday.

England’s top clubs also want to run the Guinness Premiership, which they would immediately ring-fence against relegation. Peter Wheeler, Leicester’s chief executive, and Nigel Wray, the owner of Saracens, met Bill Beaumont, the IRB’s representative on the RFU management board, on Thursday.

Their controversial blueprint would see Harlequins, the runaway National Division One leaders, promoted to the Premiership along with Cornish Pirates :D — irrespective of where they finish. :D Whoever comes bottom of the Premiership would escape relegation, creating a closed shop of 14 teams.

That has lit the blue touchpaper, so expect fireworks of opposition from the RFU and IRB, not to mention the Celtic nations, who will not appreciate the idea of a European Cup being run by a consortium of English clubs

Great result for the Cornish Pirates beating the Bedford Blues 26 - 21 at Kenwyn this afternoon. Great charcter shown by the team roared on by a sizeable crowd which shows that the support is still there despite the two recent defeats. Should shut up all you septics for a while!!! Good job too!
