According to the organisers 10,000-12,000 demonstrators, 5,000 according to the police - but 7,000 according to local police -marched in Carcasona (Carcassonne) on Saturday to demand language rights for Occitan and the other languages within the French territories.
Referring to the Framework Convention for National Minoritiues and the ECRML, Mr Louarn stated that : "The French State, by not recognizing the international laws for minorities, means that minority language speakers do not exist: their non-existence in rights leads them to a non-existence in fact. The suffocating of Occitan, as with other the regional languages of France, is a crime against humanity, because our languages form part of the living inheritance of humanity."
