Greenpeace do a lot of fine work, but occasionally make the odd booboo - in this case where the responsibility lies for an accident causing environmental damage is questionable...

Greenpeace has been fined nearly £4,000 for damaging a World Heritage coral reef site in the Philippines. The conservation group's flagship, the Rainbow Warrior II, collided with the reef system at Tubbataha Reef Marine Park while on a four-month environmental tour of the Asia-Pacific.

Officials from the marine park said nearly 100 sq m of the reef had been badly damaged in the collision on Monday. Greenpeace said the accident was 'very regrettable', but blamed outdated maritime charts which showed the Rainbow Warrior II was 1.5 miles from the reef.

'The accident could have been avoided if the chart was accurate,' said Red Constantino, regional Greenpeace official of Southeast Asia said. 'We feel responsible, however, and this amount will be transferred on Wednesday.'

The Greenpeace visit to the reefs in the Sulu Sea was part of a tour to promote environmentally friendly energy sources. Its divers were heading to the World Heritage marine park to investigate the effect of global warming on the coral reef when the Rainbow Warrior ran aground.

Greenpeace said the ship suffered no serious damage and had been towed into deeper water.

The blame lies fully with GP (legally it does), its no good blaming charts, you should show some level of good seamanship

Yes I would agree fancybrew. All I could say in their defence is that their overall motives were/are good..... (please don't quote in response about the road to hell/perdition being paved with good intentions :-))
