From A "Cornwall" in the U.S.

Post by cornwalldotus » Sat Nov 13, 2010 1:45 am

Hello!

I am from Cornwall, NY, located about twelve miles above the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, on the west bank of
the Hudson river. I found this forum while I was doing a search to determine if my own, new Cornwall community forum
was yet visible through a Google search. I found this forum, instead. I will link your forum to mine, and perhaps we can all become better acquainted. I'll be happy to answer any questions about life in our Cornwall and in its village, Cornwall on Hudson, and to ask a few questions of you.

Welcome. I hope that a) you will explore if you haven't already the connection between your village and the original place of that name, and others with the name (eg. In Ontario, and elsewhere around the world), b) ignore many of the posters on this forum who are here just to make idiotic remarks and stir people to respond - some weird sport.

From Australia where we have many Cornish Towns and Cornish Settlements.

Thank you, Kevrenor, I will take your advice. According to wikipedia, the first settler of Cornwall, NY was a Scotsman.
I've been associated with this NY town for 20 years, now, and I have yet to definitively determine how it came by its name, although, of course, it had to originate somehow, from the UK name. My maternal ancestors are from Cheshire, CT, a town that experienced a proportionally large influx of Cornish miners in the mid nineteenth century for employment in the bauxite mines. http://www.google.com/#hl=en&expIds=172 ... 876f761175

I am a member of a large forum based in the UK where there is little respect shown when arguments become heated, so I think nothing of that sort that I encounter here will surprise or discourage me.
