NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE

BASQUE COUNTRY: POLICE TORTURE IN THE SPOTLIGHT

The Spanish Ambassador has written to the general secretary (GS) of the Celtic League, acknowledging receipt of a letter sent by him about the ill treatment of Basque people while in Spanish police custody earlier this year.
The Ambassador said that the letter from the GS will be forwarded to the authorities in Spain for their consideration. The full text of the letter can be found below. At his next branch meeting the GS will propose that members agree to a `Basque Evening' where he hopes to inform members about the current situation in the Basque country, where claims of torture by those in police custody are still commonplace.

"London 3rd March
Dear Mr Tal-e-bot
I hearby acknowledge receipt of your letter dated on February 15th.
Spain is a state based on the Rule of Law and if your friend has any complaint, she should proceed through their judicial means and present a demand for the violation of her rights.
As this is a strictly judicial matter, the Judicial Court in the area is the relevant authority in this in stance, but I will forward your letter to the authorities in Spain for their consideration.
Yours sincerely
Carles Casajuana"

The GS will be briefing his own (Kernow) branch members shortly and will propose the branch agree to hold a `Basque Evening' to inform members about the current situation in the Basque country and agree a programme of action to publicise more widely Celtic League opposition to torture of those held in police custody in the Basque country.
Other Celtic League branches will also be urged to increase support.
