I think we maybe need a thread like this to put our own condition in perspective.

Anyway the news today is that Catalonia is going for an independence referendum (which it would almost certainly win), and Madrid is going ballistic at just the suggestion ...

1.5 million said to have been at their recent demo. WTF! That's more than the population of several european countries. If Spain were to turn nasty would a large proportion of the population turn out to oppose the tanks? It worked 21 years ago in the Baltics, with very few casualties, but without mass popular support it would be suicidal.

Is it too much to hope for a progressive melt-down of the UK, France and Spain, such as happened in Eastern Europe? Now I think about it, isn't it odd how quickly so much changed in the East, with totally submerged countries re-emerging etc. Now they have a whole generation that have grown up free from oppression. (Like 'they take you away and exile or shoot you' -type oppression, not the 'oppression' some people see in Cornwall). Meanwhile in the 'free', 'democratic' West of Europe nothing has really changed. How long now since Franco died? Must do some research on all of this ...
