The early forms have the common L for N found in other names where N is the actual letter (Lanteglos, Newlyn, etc.), so OC nant "valley" + river name Alan. In this name, after assibiliation c.1300, the Old Cornish T hung on as an intrusion. The site is close to the Camel river, the historic name for which was Alan, Allen. On a bilingual sign it will appear as Nansalan.

It's an ancient but quite common Celtic river-name of uncertain meaning. Roman records list these rivers (possibly 14 of them, from southern Scotland to Cornwall) as 'Alauna/Alaunos'. One suggested meaning is 'rocky one' (Place-Names of Roman Britain: Rivet and Smith 1981).
